Last Christmas, my daughter was just a few months old. I had still barely mastered the art of feeding and clothing both her and myself on a daily basis: I certainly didn’t have time to make a Christmas wish list. But this year, my family has already been pestering me for gift ideas. After unsuccessfully trying to convince them that what the baby really wanted was Starbucks gift cards, I have broken down and compiled a list of awesome eco-friendly gifts for kids that push beyond the realm of stuffed toys. Here are some of the highlights:

My daughter would spend all day every day in the bathtub if I would let her, so it only makes sense that I would stock up bath toys that make an eco-friendly splash. These unconventional rubber ducks are free of dangerous BPAs and unhealthy phthalates, plus they don’t suck in any of the water that makes more traditional rubber ducks a breeding ground for mold. And their vibrant colors and whimsical patterns make them fun for parents and kids to admire.

My daughter has gotten really interested in watching me cook lately. She’s gotten even more interested in unloading the kitchen cabinets. I’m hoping that if I load up a cabinet with her very own set of dishes, she’ll entertain herself while I prepare lunch instead of stealthily sneaking underfoot and raiding my pots and pans. This multi-piece tea set made from recycled milk containers should keep her occupied for hours: and, if she ever focuses long enough to throw an actual tea party, I’ll know she’s drinking out of cups that are free of BPA and phthalates.

Bright, vibrant colors are great for little kids, but even toddlers can appreciate something a little more subtle. Zenblocks are crafted from elegant, sustainable walnut wood and look at first glance like they would be more suited as decoration in a modern apartment than they would as a must-have toy in a playroom. But these innovative toys are great for kids who like a unique challenge in their building processes. The multifaceted surfaces can be stacked in a variety of ways, making them perfect for your little outside-the-box thinker. Not only are the environmentally-conscious, they are a terrific tactile sensory toy for kids who need a little extra stimulation during playtime.
