For the last five years, my sister has lived nearly 400 miles away from me. We’ve both gotten married in the intervening years. She’s become a mother to two spirited little boys, while I’ve been raising a sassy and spunky daughter: she was actually pregnant with her second son while I was pregnant with my little girl. We text and Skype whenever we can but the distance is difficult for both of us to deal with. I haven’t seen them in person since I hosted my nephew’s first birthday party back in September. So I rejoiced when my sister decided to look for her job in my area. In less than a month, she and her family will be right here in my house with me while she goes on job interviews and goes apartment hunting (though I’m also hoping we’ll have plenty of time to go visit the new LegoLand theme park). This means our kids will finally get to spend an extended period of time together, which also means they’ll be sharing a lot of toys. So I’ve been hunting down the best of gifts that are unisex and eco-friendly so there’s plenty of Christmas joy for all our little rugrats:
BeginAgain Eco-Friendly Natural Rubber Ball Bathtub Playset
My daughter loves the bath so much, that she’s already got an impressive arsenal of bath toys, including some innovative rubber ducks. But kids aren’t always great about sharing toys on dry land, much less in the tub, so we’ll need plenty of toys to go around. We’re already planning on bathing all three kids together whenever possible to conserve water, so it makes sense to also seek out eco-friendly bath toys. These durable toys are crafted from plant-based natural rubber and are free of BPAs, phthalates, and lead, so they are eco-safe as well as fun for boys and girls.
Recycled Plastic Recycling Truck
When I was a kid, we played with garbage trucks. These days, kids can get an environmental education by playing with recycling trucks instead. This neat toy isn’t just green in color: it is crafted from recycled milk containers which have been reprocessed into high-density polyethylene, meaning it’s also green in its use of materials.
Any toy that’s big enough for all three kids to use at once is a winner in the sharing game. As a bonus, this one will appeal to all age groups. The two babies will be drawn to the bright colors, while the 2-year old will benefit more immediately from the educational aspect. And toys don’t get much more eco-friendly than this one. All the wood in this eco-friendly line of toys is sourced from responsibly-managed plantations that have been certified by the United States Forest Stewardship Council. It’s also painted with water-based paints that are free of volatile organic compounds, meaning its vibrant colors don’t come at a health or environmental cost.
